The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has officially endorsed the United Nations Open Source Principles, a framework designed to foster the adoption and advancement of open-source technologies within UN divisions and beyond. These principles were developed by the Open Source United community, established under the UN Executive Council’s Digital Technology Network program.
The principles outline eight core tenets:
- Openness by Default – Adopting open-source solutions as the standard approach.
- Reciprocal Contribution – Actively engaging with and contributing to the open-source community.
- Security by Design – Prioritizing data protection and cybersecurity from the outset.
- Inclusivity – Encouraging participation from diverse contributors.
- Reusability – Ensuring cross-platform compatibility of solutions.
- Comprehensive Documentation – Providing accessible and thorough guidelines.
- RISE (Recognition, Incentives, Support, and Engagement) – Supporting and motivating developers.
- Scalability – Enabling the long-term sustainability of open-source technologies.
OSI Executive Director Stefano Maffulli emphasized that these principles align with the fundamental values of open source, which have driven innovation and contributed to trillions of dollars in economic impact. He urged organizations worldwide to join the initiative and support the development of open digital solutions.
